Eberspächer fuel-fired heater Factory Mounted and Aftermarket Fuel-Fired Heaters Comparison

There are two ways to equip Ford vehicle of additional fuel-fired heater: to order a heater as an option for brand new car or to install aftermarket heater, i.e. Webasto or Eberspächer.

When you install aftermarket heater, you can add a remote control to the heater, such as Telestart or EasyStart (depends on the heater brand), mini-timer, GSM-control or simple direct start button.

Ford factory equipped heater has a specific control via CAN-bus, but has no ability of remote control connection. The only way to start and stop of such a heater is using of Driver Information System (DIS) in the instrument cluster.

Remote Control Implementation

The simplest method to connect remote control to the Ford heater is to change a control unit of Ford FFH by control unit from Eberspächer. But in that case heater becomes “aftermarket”, because it looses connection to vehicle’s CAN-bus. Timers and direct start function in the DIS, and also automatic boost mode becomes unavailable. Also it needs to change a configuration of vehicle to have a correct representation of fuel consumption.

We developed a module called RCP (Remote Control Plugin) to add a possibility of remote control to the fuel-fired heater of your Ford vehicle by the one side, and preserve resources of original Ford control by the other side.

RCP Operating Principles

Module is connected to CAN-bus and translates signals from remotes to the heater via CAN-bus in digital format.

Problems of Original Ford Control and Their Solutions by RCP

Remote Start and Stop

All RCP modules have embedded function of FFH start/stop by the vehicle’s original remote control. Also you can choose a version of RCP with specialized remote control to get a maximum usability of your fuel-fired heater. Of course, the most significant disadvantage of the factory equipped FFH on some models of Ford is the lack of possibilities for remote starting and stopping.
LCD Lag on Cold (Negative Temperatures)

All RCP modules let immediately start of FFH by remote or quick start button. No need to start FFH with DIS. The LCD of Driver Information System becomes disabled on negative temperatures. It is very discomfortable to make a choice in menu blindly, from memory.
Heater Blocking

All RCP modules can reset FFH from blocking without other tools applying.

If a problem is not caused by FFH malfunction (ex. exhaust system is clogged by snow, fuel contamination by water, etc.), it can be enough to reset ECU errors by RCP.
The fuel-fired heater is blocked in the case of 5 unsuccessful starts. Special diagnostic tool is needed to be applied to unblock FFH for continue working.
Boost Heat Mode

RCP module lets you set up Boost Heat Mode for your needs. Also you can control Boost Heat Mode manually by one-touch button. The algorithm of FFH operation in Boost Heat Mode is simple and non-optimal. Driver can only switch the Boost Heat Mode on or off by the means of Driver Information System.
Battery Discharging

RCP has 3 stages of battery discharging protection. It checks battery voltage before FFH start, during FFH operation and also checks the time of autonomous work of FFH. All the protection mechanisms are adjustable to give more efficiency. Often the original control of battery discharging is not enough. FFH and especially the climate control consume quite much battery power. It can result in situation, when battery energy is not enough to engine start after FFH cycle has been completed.
